《處女泉》講述十六世紀，瑞典一處偏僻的鄉下的一個春天的早晨，富農特利的獨生女卡琳，由她們家的養女英格利陪同一起去教堂作禮拜。在路上遇到三個牧羊人，開始他們談得很開心，後來他們強姦了卡琳，並打死了她，而躲在暗處的英格利嚇得說不出話來。當天黃昏，三個牧羊人來到卡琳的家，吃飯時拿出卡琳的血衣外套要賣。英格利也剛好返家，一問之下真相大白，特利怒而殺死三個牧羊人。第二天早上，特利夫婦找到女兒的屍體併發摯要在這裏蓋一座寺廟，就在他們抱起卡琳時，從卡琳頭下的地上冒出一眼泉水來。特利夫婦以為是上帝的施恩。
導演李安就曾表示自己之所以走上電影道路，是受伯格曼的經典作品《處女泉》的影響。李安曾經說過：「它的畫面和主題，深深震撼了我，《處女泉》成了把我點醒的啟示錄。自那以後，我覺得自己徹底改變了，我暗暗下決心將來一定要做電影。」
英瑪柏格曼 Ingmar Bergman [ 1918 - 2007 ]
英瑪柏格曼是世界電影藝術史上的頂級大師，開闢了現代派作者電影的先河。他超過半世紀的豐沛創作生涯，最為人熟知的應該是《第七封印》。這部以中世紀為背景的黑白片，讓柏格曼獲得一九五七年坎城評審團特別獎，也打開他的國際知名度。
伯格曼一九一八年出生於瑞典烏普薩拉，父親是位虔誠的路德派教徒，曾長期擔任牧師，母親是一位上層階級出身的小姐。父親對伯格曼的管束嚴厲，伯格曼的童年生活籠罩著一種嚴峻、壓抑的氣氛，這一切對伯格曼後來的創作有著極為深刻的影響。
